Animal Cruelty Prevention Month

4/23/2016

Animals hold a special place in our lives, and we strive to ensure that they are well cared for and treated with kindness and dignity. Unfortunately, not everyone is so diligent with the care they provide. It is up to all of us to be aware of how we interact with our pets, and to also be vigilant to animals around us. In this way we can all play a role in ending animal cruelty.

First, it may be helpful to understand what is meant by animal cruelty. Animal cruelty is not simply the act of harming an animal. It also include failing to properly care for an animal, (whether pet, farm animal, or wild animal) or it could take the form of animal hoarding. Cruelty is also thought to be a precursor to other types of violence and abuse including: child mistreatment, elder abuse, and domestic violence.

So, how can we help prevent suffering in these animals? Start by noticing signs of abuse. Direct violence is easy to identify. Look for evidence of hoarding, dogs that are left chained for extended periods, animals that are abandoned, or animals left outside with lack of appropriate shelter especially in extreme cold or heat.  Wounds and emaciation may also be signs that the animal is lacking in proper veterinary care.

If you notice these signs, it is time to take action. Document what you see, when, and where. Notifying the appropriate authorities is the next step. This may vary by locality, but typically animal control or the humane society can help directly or put you in touch with the appropriate authorities. If you do not have the numbers for these agencies, you can potentially call the non-emergency police line to find the appropriate group to assist with the suspected abuse.

While one or two people cannot eliminate all cruelty, they can make a huge difference in the loves of the animals they are able to help.
